The feet of poetry

Arkaan (singular: Rukn) are short rhythmic units — the syllable patterns from which every metre is assembled. Classical Aruuz recognises eight primary feet, each with a memorable name such as Faulun, Failun, Mafaeelun and Mustafilun.

How feet form a Bahr

A Bahr is simply a defined sequence of Arkaan. For example, repeating the foot “Faulun” four times produces the metre Mutaqarib. Learning the feet is the first step to scanning any verse.
