What is Ilm-e-Aruuz?

Ilm-e-Aruuz is the science of poetic metre. It studies the rhythmic patterns (Bahr) that make a verse musical and balanced. Every classical Urdu couplet is composed within a defined metre, and Aruuz is the discipline that measures and names those patterns.

Why it matters for Naat

Naat poetry is meant to be recited and sung. A verse that sits perfectly on its Bahr flows naturally on the tongue and in the heart. Understanding Aruuz helps both poets and reciters honour the intended rhythm of a Kalam.

The building blocks

Aruuz rests on a few core ideas: Arkaan (metrical feet), Bahr (the overall metre built from those feet), Taqti (scanning a line into its syllables), and the rhyme system of Radeef and Qafiya. Each has its own article in this series.
